RiverLink announces RiverMUSIC -- a summer of sweet sounds by the water

ASHEVILLE, NC -- In their continuing effort to bring people down to the French Broad River to enjoy its splendor, RiverLink is hosting a series of live music performances beside the river this summer. Officially known as "RiverLink's RiverMUSIC Presented by New Belgium Brewing," the series will consist of five concerts at the RiverLink Sculpture and Performance Plaza, 117 Riverside Dr. Inspired by a grant from the Chaddick Foundation, RiverMUSIC is also sponsored by Pisgah Investments. New Belgium signed on as primary sponsor and will have a presence and supply beer at all the events.

All concert dates are Fridays -- June 29, July 13, August 3, August 24 and September 14 -- and all events start at 5:00 p.m. There will be beer from New Belgium, food trucks, live music from local and national acts, and the waters of the beautiful French Broad flowing right by the stage.

The lineup:

Friday June 29: From Brooklyn, NY, the 10-piece styling of Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, with special guests The Krektones and Mad Tea Party.

Friday July 13: Bluegrass on the river with Sanctum Sully and special guests Bobby Miller & The Virginia Daredevils

Friday August 3: An evening with The 42nd Street Jazz Band

Friday August 24: Sirius B. with special guests The Blood Gyspies

Friday September 14: purveyors of the funk Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band with special guests The Fritz.

Attendees will be encouraged to leave their cars at home and get to the concerts via alternative modes of transportation. Asheville on Bikes will provide a bike corral for stowing bicycles. There is also a paddle-up option. Paddlers can easily float to the concerts or to nearby Jean Webb Park, a takeout point beneath the RiverLink Bridge, where they can lock their boats and walk to the concerts.

RiverLink is the regional non-profit working to revitalize the French Broad River and its tributaries as a place for everyone to live, work and play. This spring, New Belgium Brewing announced the opening of a new $175 million brewing operation in the River District of Asheville - from Craven Street to Haywood Road -- located right across the river from the concert venue.

RiverLink will be recruiting volunteers to do everything from sorting recycling to parking cars to pouring beer. Contact RiverLink's Dave Russell for more information -- 252-8474, ext. 11 or dave@riverlink.org -- about the series or about volunteering.

Hello!

We wanted to let you know about an upcoming fun event with Constance Williams!

Constance’s vibrant encaustic paintings and amazing giclee prints of select works are now installed at Neo Cantina in Asheville’s historic Biltmore Village,

which is just a short drive from her working studio and gallery in the River Arts District.

There will be an artist reception on May 22, from 5 – 7 pm at Neo Cantina, 10 Biltmore Plaza, Asheville.

Come say Hi to Constance and discuss encaustics (and giclees!) while enjoying some complimentary appetizers at Neo (“Southwestern Appetizers With A Twist of Asheville”).

Neos recently refurbished atmosphere is fabulous – so perhaps also make an evening of it with dinner plans at Neo Cantina, surrounded by great encaustic art!

Moving Street Party & Benefit Concert Mark Completion of $1.2 Million Clingman Avenue Streetscape Project

“Clingman Circle Celebration” and “RAD ONE Neighborhood Benefit” to showcase and support the beautiful gateway to River Arts District and West End/Clingman Avenue Neighborhood

ASHEVILLE, NC – On Tuesday June 5th at 6:00 PM, the public is invited to join Mayor Terry Bellamy, Asheville community leaders, River Arts District business owners and artists, West End/Clingman Avenue neighbors and project supporters as they celebrate the recent completion of the $1.2 million Clingman Avenue streetscape enhancement project with a moving street party down Clingman Avenue, and a benefit concert and silent auction at the Grey Eagle.

After a ceremonial ribbon cutting at Clingman & Hilliard, the “Clingman Circle Celebration” will walk, bike, roll and dance down Clingman to the new traffic circle at Roberts Street to the sounds of Youth at Jazz, Cub Scout Pack No. 24 bearing flags and our Master of Ceremonies, Chall Gray.  Moving Street Party goers are encouraged to DRESS UP! in support of their favorite neighborhood organization. To support WECAN, show up in Dots! For Asheville On Bikes... please wear Plaid! The Asheville Area Arts Council would love to see you in RED!  River Arts District Artists love YELLOW!  Asheville Greenworks is looking for a sea of GREEN, of course!  The organization with the most people sporting their color or pattern wins the "Best CCC Organization" donation of $100!!

Remarks by Mayor Bellamy, NC Department of Transportation, RADBA, Mountain Housing Opportunities, and Asheville on Bikes will begin at 6:30 PM in the FLS Energy parking lot, 130 Roberts Street.  The "Best CCC participation" award will be decided at FLS, at 7pm to wrap up the Clingman Circle Celebration.

The “RAD ONE Neighborhood Benefit” will begin at 7:00 PM at the Gray Eagle. Musical guests include the blues/rock harmonies of The Blue Dragons, 20th century hot jazz with Jerome Widenhouse & His Roaring Lions and Ivory Coast Master Drummer, Adama. The concert and a silent auction will raise money to support Asheville GreenWorks' "Green the RAD" initiative, which helps maintain the new streetscape, and the "ONE Neighborhood Art Mentoring Program,” a new program that brings neighborhood youth to the RAD for free arts and cultural learning experiences.  Tickets to The Grey Eagle are $10 at the door.

The evening’s events will thank the NC DOT and City of Asheville for funding and building the streetscape enhancements, and the many people who helped shepherd the project’s implementation since it was first conceived in 2003. In addition, thanks go out to the River Arts District Business Association’s members who have been contributing to the upkeep of the new Streetscape for the past year.  The evening's events are a prelude to the River Arts District Artist’s Spring 2012 Studio Stroll to be held that weekend, June 9-10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the RAD.

“The Mystery of Picasso”

This documentary by renowned French filmmaker Henri-Georges Clouzot follows his dear friend through the creation of twenty pieces, in a film that is a work of art within itself.

Born October 25, 1881 in Málaga, Spain. Picasso's gargantuan full name, which honors a variety of relatives and saints, is Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso.

He remembered, "When I was a child, my mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso."

Please, come and join us for an inspirational afternoon. Free and open to the public.

Riverside Studios is located in the River Arts District on the corner of Riverside Dr. and W. Haywood St. near White Duck Taco Restaurant.

[Jon Graham.]

Person: Jon Graham
Place: Riverside Studios
Passion: Landscape Paintings

Jongraham

Everyday, we move, we step, we ignore and we forget. We pass buildings; broken, uninhabitable and condemned. We drive beneath power-lines, unaware of their monstrosity. Our routes, at times become so familiar that we unknowingly dismiss the landscapes we pass.

Jon Graham's eyes see the background to our days. He finds both beauty and sadness with the past, in buildings left behind, standing but not producing. Graham started a series of landscape paintings years ago in his hometown of Wilmington, N.C. and has been recreating them ever since.

This collection is primarily of old industry, and focuses on places completely removed from ecosystems. Graham describes these buildings as, “human hijackers,” places both unlivable and unworkable, yet still visible. These buildings, Graham believes, represent visual and mental pollution, for they once were  facilities used to create things we do not need. And now they stand vacant; fading with time.

Graham takes these spaces in time and makes them visually present. His paintings persuade the viewers to recognize the beauty in old industry; the rawness in it all. He often incorporates trash and objects found on sight into his paintings, as a reminder that it surrounds us because of us. Most of his pieces are highlighted by a bold blue sky, perhaps, to show that everything eventually moves into the air.

Graham not only paints old buildings, he also paints on old buildings. Last year, he worked on a mural in downtown Weaverville on the side of the Aabani Salon building [Main Street and Central.] Graham worked with the building owner's visual ideas and incorporated his own style with the outcome of funky street art; a confident, grinning female with flowing locks of color soaring through tall shoots of grass [a must see.] Graham is currently sketching out plans for another mural in the Asheville area, so keep your eyes peeled.

Also, take the trip over to Hickory, where Graham and a handful of other River Arts District artists contributed to the “Waking Up With Van Gogh” show. The show is centered around Van Gogh's iconic Bedroom in Arles piece, and each artist is asked to respond to the painting with their own, throwing in their artistic creativity and ideas. Graham interpreted the Bedroom in Arles piece as something Van Gogh was accustomed to; a familiar setting. Graham decided to recreate something he views every time he steps outside his studio; the Smokey Park Bridge. Most people may overlook this view of thousands of cars coming and going each day, but for Graham, the ever-present movement on the bridge captivates him time and time again; the background to our days.

Check out Graham's website at www.jongrahamart.com, visit Riverside Studios Monday-Saturday 11-4 and contact him via e-mail at info@jongrahamart.com.
